The acreage dedicated to vineyards in Switzerland is incredibly small. Also, most Swiss wine is consumed at home leading it to be quite scarce. It’s this scarcity that probably gives it the novelty value and the Swiss take care to produce interesting wines at the upper end of the market.
The principal wine growing regions are Geneva, Vaud, Valais, Grisons and Ticino. Ticino, the Italian speaking area in the south excels at Merlot and it’s here we’ve found a White Merlot treasure: Terre di Gudo 2002 Ticino Bianco di Merlot.
Also try some of the best Pinot Noir from Rene Farre et Fils. They are also making great wines from the St Pierre Petite, a grape only found in Switzerland.
