Not always to everybody’s immediate taste, Reisling seems to be rising in popularity at the moment. Described by Jancis Robinson as “the greatest of grapes”, it’s responsible for some of Germany’s greatest wines.
One of the best regions is the Rhinegaw where you’ll find some of the most prestigious estates. Family run Weingut Leitz is a good example. The Leitz way is to do as little to the wines as possible believing quality is made in the vineyard and maximised in the press-house not the cellar.
Another great discovery is Weingut Familie Rauen based in the Mosel. This is a fascinating place run from a suburban house where you find the door to the cellar in the kitchen. Sholtes Findling Auslese is also worthy of mention.
German reds are also starting to make an impact. They are light and very unusual. Again family Rauen provide us with some great wines.
