There are few groups heralding global warming as a benefit but English wine producers could be one. Think of English weather at the moment and you don’t generally associate the thought with vines bursting with ripening grapes.
One area that is experiencing a success story is one that’s climate and soils are on a par with the Champagne region. Sparkling wine producers in the south of England are enjoying warmer temperatures and are said to be experiencing a decade like the 1950s in the Champagne region.
Closer to our home in Bury St Edmunds, Ickworth’s Suffolk Pink sparkling wine has had a sell out year. Its 2004, won the silver award at the English and Welsh wine of the year awards 2006. It is bottle fermented using the Methode Traditionelle as is Champagne and is made form Auxerrois and Pinot Noire grape varieties.
2007 was a great year for the Ickworth Vineyard with its red, white and rose wines winning awards.
